Waterford drop another two home points - January 17, 2001
Waterford 1 St. Francis 1
Waterford United's chances of winning promotion straight back to the Eircom Premier Division took another knock last night as they failed to see off St. Francis at the RSC.
In a game that Waterford really had to win in was the Division One's bottom team that went away the happiest. The point lifted them from the foot of the table but they hardly deserved it.
Waterford started brightly and it was no surprise when they took the lead after 10 minutes.
The home team won a corner on the right and when Kevin Waters crossed low and hard to the near post Kevin Whittle reacted quickest to flick the ball into the net off the body of St. Francis goalkeeper Gary Rogers.
Waterford seemed to be coasting to the win when they were caught with a sucker punch in the 86th minute. Shane Doherty broke on the right and hit a perfect cross which was met by the head of Paul McGovern who looped it over the Waterford goalkeeper.
