Youghal make Students sweat - January 8, 2001
UCD 3 Youghal United 1
Munster Leaguers Youghal United made Eircom Premier side UCD work hard for their place in the FAI Cup third-round draw.
The Students got what looked like the ideal start when Robert McAuley scored a gift goal after 20 minutes. But Youghal had other ideas and battled back to equalise early in the second half. And UCD had to fight hard to re-establish supremacy with late goals from Robert Martin and Ciaran Martyn.
McAuley pounced when Youghal defender David Coleman ignored a call from 'keeper Kieran Fleming and chested a harmless cross into the UCD player's path.
But Derek Murphy scored a cracking equaliser after 50 mins, running onto a parry from UCD goalkeeper Paddy O'Leary to fire home from well outside the box.
The match was in the balance until UCD substitutes Kevin Grogan and Robert Martin combined to restore UCD's lead after 72 minutes - Martin heading home Grogan's long-range free kick.
Ciaran Martyn made it safe eight minutes from time when he slipped the Youghal offside trap and slotted past the advancing Fleming.
