Students left counting Crowe's - February 19,
2001
UCD 3 Bohemians 4
UCD were left counting Crowe's goals yesterday - and it was definitely a case of three for sorrow! The Bohs striker opened and finished the scoring in the first and last minutes and had one in between for good measure!
The Students thought they had earned a point when Ciaran Martyn made it 3-3 with just three minutes to go. But there was still time for Crowe to run onto a Paul Byrne header, hold off a defender and fire the winner low past Barry Ryan.
It was an important goal because it helped Bohemians close the gap somewhat on tearaway Shels, who were held to a draw by Finn Harps on Friday.
At the start of the game, just 17 seconds had elapsed when Crowe got between the UCD central defenders to lob a header over the advancing Ryan. And Ryan was bury for the next half hour as the Gypsies attacked in waves.
But against the run of play, UCD equalised. Eamonn McLaughlin was fouled, Paul O'Meara swung in the free and Robert McAuley headed home at the far post.
Ryan continued to keep UCD in the game, saving from Paul Byrne - twice - and Kevin Hunt. And then, on the hour, the Students grabbed a shock lead: Ciaran Martyn played a one-two with Derek Swan before firing home from just inside the box.
It only took eight minutes for Crowe to equalise, heading home Dave Morrison's cross. Eight minutes further on, Bohs were ahead again when Trevor supplied the cross and Alex Nesovic supplied the headed finish.
But then came those dramatic final minutes. A mistake by Paul Byrne allowed David Quinn to cross for Martyn to score his second equaliser - but Crowe had the last say by completing his third hat trick of the season.
