UCD miss out of UEFA Cup place - June 9, 2000 UCD missed out on the possibility of playing in the UEFA Cup despite finishing second in the UEFA Fair Play League. The Students - Ireland's fair-play champions - finished behind Sweden's IFK Norrkoping by the narrowest of margins. Sweden finished top with 8.279 55 points with Ireland in second on 8.258 49 points. UCD then went into a draw for the two further places but missed out to Spain's Rayo Vallecano and Lierse from Belgium. As a result UCD are in European action the week after next. The face Bulgaria's FC Velbazhd in the first round of the InterToto Cup on either June 17 or 18, with the second leg the following week. Velbazhd finished third in the Bulgarian League behind Levski Sofia and CSKA Sofia to qualify. In the first leg at Belfield UCD would want to be mindful of Velbazhd striker Mihail Mihajlov who finished second in the scoring charts in Bulgaria with 16 goals.
