Kerr forced into changes to u17 squad - June 6, 2000

Brian Kerr has been forced into a rethink about his u17 squad which travels to Portugal this week for an international friendly tournament. He lost the services of five (Barry Roche, Niall Hudson, Brian Cash, Niall McNamara and Andy Reid) of the six Nottingham Forest players who were in his original squad because of club commitments. The loss forced Kerr into calling four more players into his squad.

One of the newcomers is 6ft 4in Barnsley defender Michael Welch, whose mother hails from Wexford, while Saul Deeny (Notts County), Michael Keane (Preston) and JJ Melligan (Wolves) also come in. Kerr has also lost Blackburn' s Fred Murray, who injured ribs in the recent u17 tournament in Slovakia.

Ireland travel to Portugal on Wednesday, June 7, and meet the USA the following day. Their remaining fixtures are Norway on Thursday, June 8, and Portugal on Sunday, June 11.
