UCD are Superchamps - July 3, 2000 UCD 2 Bohemians 2
UCD won the first trophy of the National League season yesterday when they beat Bohemians on penalties in the Supercup final at Tolka Park. It was always on the cards that the Students - back in training for over a month and already in European action - would have the edge over Bohs, Shelbourne and Cork City in this competition and, after seeing off League champions Shelbourne in the semi-final on Saturday, they drew first blood in the final. Former Bohs star Brian Mooney went on a mazy run before unleashing a 25-yard rocket after ten minutes. After Maurice O'Driscoll had pulled Bohemians level six minutes later, converting a David Kelly cross, Mooney was involved again to restore UCD's lead within two minutes. The winger's cross caused all sorts of trouble and Eoin Mullen turned the ball into his own net. Former Wolves striker Glen Crowe should have had a second-half hat trick before he finally played in Dean Brennan for the equaliser after 60 minutes. After five penalties apiece, the teams were level 4-4. UCD 'keeper Barry Ryan saved from Tony O'Connor and Dean Brennan, giving Eoin Bennis the chance to win it. But Bohs' Wayne Russell took a page out of Ryan's book and saved brilliantly.
Own-goal scorer Eoin Mullen completed a lousy
afternoon by smashing his spot-kick against the crossbar and it was
left to UCD's Kevin Kilmurray to seal the trophy and the
£8,000 winners' cheque.
