Cup Blues as Saints see red - January 11, 2001
St. Francis 0 Waterford United 2
Waterford United had a surprisingly easy passage through to a third-round FAI Cup with UCD after a bad-tempered replay with St. Francis at Hyland Park, Baldonnel, yesterday.
The Saints weren't helped at all by the sendings off of Graham Doyle and John Chandler. Doyle's early-second-half dismissal hurt particularly badly, coming as it did just seven minutes before Waterford wrapped up the tie with an Alan Kirby goal.
Referee David McKeon had given fair warning, with six first-half bookings - but, while the yellow cards were divided evenly, it was Waterford who were creating all the chances.
Kevin Waters was twice denied by Saints defender John Reid before the Blues struck in the 31st minute. Ireland underage international John Frost played the ball forward for Aaron Moroney who turned and threaded a pass through the static Saints defence for Paul Scully to sidefoot past the advancing Gary Rogers.
The home side fared better at the start of the second half, with Martin Francis twice drawing good saves from Anthony Fennelly. But in the 56th minute Graham Doyle picked up his second yellow and seven minutes later Alan Kirby put the tie beyond them when he caught a David Whittle cross on the meat.
St. Francis' misery was complete in the final minute when John Chandler was dismissed, also for a second yellow.
