Staunton poised to join ...? - October 9, 2000 Republic of Ireland international Steve Staunton is set to join some team! Since the defender got a free transfer from Liverpool last week he has been linked with at least five clubs. The favourites to sign him are his former club Aston Villa - but the only club to make a concrete offer so far are First Division Sheffield United, who have offered him a two-year contract. Also in the picture are Derby County, Everton and Tranmere Rovers. Stan's agent, Michael Kennedy, believes the player will join a new team within a couple of days. He said: "Villa are one of two or three interested parties who have inquired about Steve's plans. I would anticipate something concrete happening within the next few days. "I have been hearing for ages that John Gregory and Doug Ellis are big admirers of Steve. Now is their chance to prove it. "Steve has one or two irons in the fire and he is ready to leave Liverpool if a club of comparable stature are prepared to sign him. He is of the opinion that Villa would certainly fit that description."
