Now Sligo hit financial crux - November 8, 2000 Sligo Rovers are the latest Eircom League club to run into serious financial difficulties. According to manager Tommy Cassidy the club is finding it increasingly difficult to meet its wage bill because of falling gates. Former Northern Ireland international Cassidy has moulded Sligo into promotion contenders in division one - but still too few people are coming through the turnstiles. "Sligo cannot survive on gate receipts which generally stand at about £1,000 a game," Cassidy said. "The last couple of weeks I know it has been a struggle to make up the money for wages because not enough is coming in at the gate and I feel sorry for the people at the club who are trying." Sligo's difficulties come hot on the heels of similar problems for fellow north-westerners Derry and Finn Harps, as well as waterford in the south - and in the same week that Shelbourne announced a massive sponsorship deal. And rueful Cassidy said: "I think it's a problem with Irish football that the rich are getting richer and the poor poorer". |
