Sudden death of Sheehan shocks Irish football - August 8, 2000 Tony Sheehan, 77, died suddenly at his home in Dublin over the weekend. The popular National League press officer will live long in the memory of soccer people all over Ireland. He served the game for over 60 years in some capacity or other and in that time he made a lot of friends. Tony began his soccer career in 1940, playing for Cork, but he will be best remembered for his insightful writing on the game. Tony joined Radio Eireann in 1952 and was the voice of Soccer Survey for over a decade. He was a founding member of the Soccer Writers' Association of Ireland in 1955 and went on to become president of the association for three years in the late '80s. Tony Sheehan's remains will arrive at the Church of the Annunciation in Rathfarnham, Dublin, at 5pm on Wednesday. The Requiem Mass will be at 10am on Thursday with the funeral to Mount Venus Cemetery in Rathfarnham. May he rest in peace.
