McCarthy trims Irish squad - August 25, 2000

Centre back Paul Butler is among seven players discarded by Irish manager Mick McCarthy ahead of the World Cup qualifier on September 2.

McCarthy has trimmed his squad from 30 to 22, with Terry Phelan, Curtis Fleming, Lee Carsley, Graham Kavanagh, Keith O'Neill and Gareth Farrelly also left out.

Derby's Rory Delap is the only member of the original thirty definitely ruled out by injury - and Butler's ommission means that McCarthy is confident Gary Breen will recover from his double-vision problem.

Ipswich's Matt Holland, who has a slight ankle injury, is inlcuded in the final 22.

Squad:
Goalkeepers - Alan Kelly (Blackburn), Shay Given (Newcastle), Dean Kiely (Charlton)
Defenders - Stephen Carr (Tottenham), Gary Kelly and Ian Harte (Leeds), Steve Staunton (Liverpool), Gary Breen (Coventry), Richie Dunne (Everton), Phil Babb (Sporting Lisbon),
Midfielders - Roy Keane (Man Utd), Mark Kinsella (Charlton), Steve Finnan (Fulham), Jason McAteer (Blackburn), Mark Kennedy (Man City), Kevin Kilbane (Sunderland), Damien Duff (Blackburn), Matt Holland (Ipswich)
Strikers - Niall Quinn (Sunderland), David Connolly (Feyenoord), Robbie Keane (Inter Milan), Dominic Foley (Watford)
