Carr: surgery need confirmed - March 1, 2001

Republic of Ireland international full back Steve Carr flies out to Germany tomorrow morning for surgery on his hernia operation. As was feared, Carr will now miss most - if not all - of the remainder of the season.

The 24-year-old Dubliner will be sidelined for at least six weeks, which means a late-April return date at the earliest. That rules him out of Ireland's World Cup games against Cyprus and Andorra in March and the return game against Andorrra in April.

Carr missed Tottenham's mid-winter programme but his recovery seemed to going to schedule when he made two substitute appearances in early February. However, he broke down again in training and now needs corrective surgery.

"My specialist has told me that I'll need an operation for a slight hernia," Carr confirmed.

"I'm flying out to Germany this Friday to have the operation and hopefully I'll be back by Saturday night.

"I'm going to be out of action for six weeks, which is hard going, but my main feeling is one of relief because we now know what the problem is and we're moving in the right direction. Now I'm just looking to getting it sorted."
