Carey fails to impress at Gillingham - July 24, 2000

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler has decided not to offer terms to out-of-contract Norwich City midfielder Shaun Carey after the player failed to impress during a week's trial at Priestfield.

Carey played in two friendlies for Gillingham and, though he did nothing wrong, Hessenthaler felt that the former Irish underage international was not an improvement on the players that he already has at the club.

Hessenthaler said: "I had a chat with Shaun about the situation and I wish him all the best. He's a good player but I didn't think he was better than what I've got."

Bristol Rovers are now interested in bringing Carey on trial to the Memorial Stadium.
