Byrne waits for word - February 27, 2001

West Ham United's Shaun Byrne - on duty with the Irish u21 squad - must wait to hear whether Huddersfield Town want to take him on loan for the rest of the season.

Byrne is on trial at the first division club at the moment and was due to play for the reserves against Oldham Athletic last night.

That plan was scuppered when the former u16 European Championship-winning skipper got a late call-up from Don Givens, after Alan Quinn and Liam Miller withdrew from the squad.

Now Huddersfield boss Lou Macari will have to make his decision based on how Byrne performs on the training field. The McAlpine Stadium club have already used four of their permitted five loan players this season and Macari wanted to be certain of getting this one right.

Byrne, normally a midfielder, can also play at left back - a position in which Huddersfield need cover following the departure of Jamie Vincent for Portsmouth last week.
