Keane earns three-match ban - August 14, 2000 Before the season even kicks off Manchester United and Ireland captain Roy Keane has landed himself in hot water. Keane picked up a three-match ban for the red card he picked up in the Charity Shield against Chelsea yesterday. Keane, who was deservedly sent off for the seventh time in his career, will be available for United's first three games of the new season and Newcastle, Ipswich and West Ham but then he must sit out the next three against Bradford, Sunderland and Everton. Only Roy will know what he was thinking about when he lunged at Gustavo Poyet to pick up his second yellow card of yesterday's Charity Shield, which Chelsea went on to win 2-0, but his manager was less than happy about the situation. "Roy will be disappointed with himself, but we have a good squad to cover him and we simply have to get on with it," said Ferguson. Of course Ferguson laid most of the blame at other quarters. He felt the referee took far too long to react to what was happening on the pitch which ultimately led to Keane being dismissed. |
