Rovers hopes take a nosedive - December 11, 2000
Shamrock Rovers 0 Galway United 0
Shamrock Rovers can forget about the League title for another year on the evidence of this woeful scoreless draw at Morton.
That's not to take away from third-from-bottom Galway who, missing Kieran Foley and Colin Fortune, came for a point and got it.
Rovers' best chance came after eight minutes when Billy Clery appeared to haul down Tony Grant in the box. But referee John O'Neill waved away the Hoops' shout - and after that Rovers' vaunted strikeforce of Grant, Tony Cousins and Sean Francis was remarkably subdued against a well organised Galway defence.
Galway carved out one good chance themselves, when Horgan saved well from Lavine in the 53rd minute. The ball was in the Rovers net from the ensuing corner, but O'Neill had already blown for pushing.
