Richardson attacks League - August 16, 2000 Shamrock Rovers boss Damien Richardson believes that the League rule on suspensions will have to be fully overhauled. His comments come after he was left furious when Bohemians were allowed to field Trevor Molloy to face his team on Monday night - despite the player being suspended! Bohemians had lodged an appeal against the ban, allowing the former St. Patrick's Athletic striker free to take his place in the team. "Our League is extraordinary," said Richardson. "There is nothing anywhere in the world that can compare with it. I don't understand the whole procedure whereby a player under suspension should be allowed to appeal to play in a game. "I don't blame Bohemians for this, nor Trevor Molloy. I blame the system. It needs to be revamped because it is archaic. What we need is a chief executive to run the League." While there has to be an appeals board for any decision which affects a person's lively-hood, it should be run with a little more sense. Richardson is not the only person who thinks this. It is believed that senior members of the League's board are also in agreement. Rovers were toothless in front of goal on Monday night and Richardson has moved to change this. He has signed former Leeds United player Tony Grant, who is currently playing for Glenavon. The striker joined Glenavon in 1997 and has had a big impact north of the border. Richardson is bringing him in as cover for Tony Cousins and Graeme Lawlor, who are both injured. «back to eircom league stories |
