Doherty does it again for Spurs - January 8, 2001
Irish u21 international Gary Doherty scored his second goal in as many games to give Tottenham Hotspur a hard-earned FA Cup third-round win over Leyton Orient.
The big youngster was bought from Luton as a striker. But on Saturday versatile Doherty was playing in the back three, just as he was when he scored his debut goal for Spurs last week. A constant threat from set-pieces, Doherty joined the attack for a 90th-minute corner and headed home powerfully to spare Tottenham's blushes with a 1-0 win.
Elsewhere in the Cup, it was a memorable weekend for Damien Delaney, Liam George and Paul McCarthy, while Davy Savage, Peter Murphy and Martin Devaney delivered the goods in the League.
Damien Delaney, who stared the season with Cork City, made his first-class debut for Premiership side Leicester City, coming on as a 75th-minute sub in the 3-0 win against York.
Irish underage striker Liam George scored the middle goal of three for Luton - a crucial strike as QPR landed a 90th-minute penalty to earn a 3-3 draw.
Paul McCarthy's 73rd-minute strike was no less important. It earned Wycombe a 1-1 draw with Grimsby, with the prize of a fourth-round trip to Wolves at stake.
In Nationwide division two, Irish senior international Dave Savage scored from the spot to earn Northampton a 1-1 draw with Brentford. And in division three, Martin Devaney scored Cheltenham's opener in a 2-1 win at Torquay, while Blackburn's Peter Murphy, on loan for the season at Halifax, scored his first-ever senior goal in his side's 3-2 win over Kidderminster.
