Boys against men as Derry cruise - January 8, 2001

Rathcoole Boys 0 Derry City 3

An Eamonn Doherty double helped untroubled Derry City cruise through the second round of the FAI Cup against Dublin amateurs Rathcoole Boys.

It could have been so different had the home side made Derry 'keeper Russell Payne pay for spilling the ball as early as the third minute. But they didn't and Derry piled on the pressure.

Rathcoole 'keeper Paul Finnegan was forced to make good saves from Doherty and Sean Hargan and on tow occasions when Finnegan was beaten, defender Keith Kearney was there to clear off his own line.

But Derry were not to be denied and Gary Becket's clever chip put them 1-0 five minutes before half time.

Doherty scored a cracking solo effort in the 64th minute and wrapped the game up in the 73rd when he pounced on the rebound after Darren McCready's shot came back off the woodwork.
