Figo nails Andorra - March 1, 2000

Portugal 3 Andorra 0

Two goals by Luis Figo helped Portugal to increase their lead in Ireland's World Cup qualifying group with a 3-0 win over whipping-boys Andorra last night.

Figo bagged his first just 30 seconds into the game, latching onto a pass from Rui Costa to sprint clear of the defence and slide the ball past goalkeeper Jesus Alvarez.

Pedro Pauleta headed Portugal 2-0 in front after 35 minutes and that's the way it stayed until half time.

But Figo struck again three minutes into the second half, playing a brilliant one-two with Nuno Gomez on the edge of the box before driving the ball home.

Portugal now have ten points from their first four games and lead Cyprus and Estonia by four points. Ireland are next with five points from three games, with away games against Cyprus and Andorra at the end of this month and a home game against Andorra in April - foot and mouth disease permitting.
