McCarthy keeps Wycombe dream alive - February 21, 2001

Irish centre back Paul McCarthy was ten-man Wycombe's hero last night as the second division side sent Wimbledon tumbling out of the FA Cup.

The 29-year-old Corkman popped up with his sixth goal of the season - his fourth in the Cup - in the last minute of extra time, to equalise what looked like a winner from the Dons' Wayne Gray.

McCarthy signed a new contract last week to keep him at Adams Park for a further two seasons - and admitted he was influenced by Wycombe's giantkilling FA Cup run.

And the former Brighton star did more than most to keep that dream alive, forcing the tie into a marathon 20-kick penalty shoot-out with his late, late equaliser and then scoring from the spot to help Wycombe to a dramatic 8-7 win.
