McCarthy signs new contract - February 15, 2001
Wycombe's Irish central defender Paul McCarthy has signed a new contract which will keep him at Adams Park for the next two seasons.
The 29-year-old Corkman - just back in the team after injury - is the sixth Wycombe player to sign a new deal since Christmas, as manager Lawrie Sanchez seeks to tie down the nucleus of a promotion-challenging team.
McCarthy joined Wanderers from Brighton in 1996 and is rapidly approaching 200 games for the Chairboys, having already clocked up over 200 for the Seagulls.
Sanchez, delighted at capturing he Irishman's signature, said: "We've got a good nucleus of players now that can carry us forward and help get us out of this division."
Doubtless the club's excellent FA Cup run - they play Wimbledon in a glamour fifth-round tie this weekend - helped influence McCarthy's decision to stay at Adams Park.
