Butler could be Jones first signing - January 8, 2001

New Wolves boss Dave Jones knows that he needs a goalkeeper and a central defender as soon as possible - which could open the door for a permanent move to Molineux for Paul Butler.

The one-cap Irish international has been told that he has no future at Sunderland, which leaves him in a position where he has to consider every offer that comes his way.

Wolves former boss Colin Lee was about to seal a £1.5m deal for Butler before he got the sack from Molineux. Butler pulled the plug on the move after Lee's sacking - but it now looks as if that deal could be revived.

Butler said: "In those circumstances I didn't want to commit myself to a move, but I don't think that I have much of a future at Sunderland so I'm open to offers."

Jones said: "I've already spoken to Peter Reid about Paul Butler but I need to consider who is available at what price."
