Russell ends Wayside hopes - January 6, 2001
St. Patrick's Athletic 4 Wayside Celtic 1
Wayside Celtic's hopes of causing a major upset in the FAI Cup were extinguished with two goals from St. Pat's midfielder Martin Russell.
Russell opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when he pounced on a mistake from Wayside goalkeeper Alan O'Sullivan to drill the ball home.
The midfielder made in 2-0 in the 55th minute when he was fed by Liam Kelly and despite mis-hitting his shot he still beat the goalkeeper.
Things got worse for Wayside in the 68th minute when midfielder Alan Byrne got his marching orders for his second bookable offence of the game and within minutes Pat's were three up when Russell swung over a corner which was dispatched to the net by Colm Foley.
Wayside did get some reward from the game when Alan McHugh hit an unstoppable shot from outside the box in the 87th minute but St. Pat's were not finished and they added a fourth in injury time through substitute Michael Holt.
