Battling Cork take point - November 4, 2000

St. Patrick's Athletic 1 Cork City 1

When these two teams were dominating the National League throughout the late Nineties, St. Pat's were always Cork's nemesis - and Cork saw more than one title sail off down the Camac or the Lee after another head-to-head failure.

So Friday night could be hailed as something of a triumph for Derek Mountfield's outfit, even though they came away with just a point and had Mark Herrick sent off for a foul on Robbie Griffin.

That result was all the more satisfying considering that Cork were one down to a Liam Kelly goal within minutes of the kick off and then had to survive a succession of goalmouth scares to avoid going further behind.

Paul Byrne swung in a corner after six minutes and Gavin Doyle's effort was probably going in when Kelly pounced to make certain. But Kelly was guilty of profligacy later and his partner, Ger McCarthy, wasted a stone sitter when he failed to control the ball with only Devine to beat.

But Cork gradually battled their way into the game and they got their just reward in the 76th minute when Jamie Mulligan hooked the ball home after excellent approach work by Neal Horgan and Steve Gaughan.
