Quinn shines at Stadium of Light - December 5, 2000

Niall Quinn returned to action for the Black Cats last night - and his performance had manager Peter Reid purring.

The Irish striker picked up the man of the match accolade as Sunderland beat Everton 2-0 to go sixth in the Premiership.

He was involved in everything good the Mackems did and was desperately unlucky not to score, hitting the bar with a volley and bringing a world-class save out of Gerrard with a powerful header.

And Reid said afterwards: "Niall was simply outstanding. He's irreplaceable!

"I think he's better than Tore Andre Flo. He's so cute and clever."

Alex Rae - from Kevin Kilbane's cross - and Kevin Phillips scored the goals, but the night belonged to Big Niall.
