Colgan commits to Hibs - February 7, 2001

Irish 'keeper Nick Colgan yesterday committed his future to Hibernian by signing a new three-year contract. The 27-year-old Drogheda-born netminder said: "This club is going places and I want to be part of it."

Colgan - 14 clean sheets in 29 starts this season - has been a major factor in helping Hibs into a top-three place in the Scottish Premiership. And he said: "We look likely to be playing in Europe next year, which will be superb - and we are still up their challenging the Old Firm.

"We have proved we can match Rangers and Celtic and I believe we can get even better. I am delighted to have signed this new contract - it's very nice to have everything sorted out."

Life is certainly good for Colgan at the moment, after years in the doldrums at Chelsea and a disastrous spell at Bournemouth.

His performances earned him an Irish senior squad call-up and he is determined to go one better and earn a full cap.

"I have always been confident in my own ability," he said. "I am fourth choice for Ireland at the moment and it would be nice to get in the team."
