Mulligan signs for Cork - August 31, 2000

James Mulligan last night became a Cork City player. The former Finn Harps striker signed a three-year deal with the Leesiders and should figure for selection for Cork's league game this weekend.

Mulligan became unsettled at Ballybofey and, when he made his feelings known, it was only a matter of time before he was moved on. Harps manager Gavin Dykes put him on the transfer list and despite competition from a number of clubs it was Cork who got his signature.

The price-tag is still unknown but it is reckoned that Mulligan cost a five-figure sum.

Dykes confirmed the deal last night. He said: "James has gone to Cork City. He was a popular player at Finn Harps and it will be difficult for us to replace him."

This is Cork manager Derek Mountfield's first major signing since he took over at Turner's Cross during the summer.

Mountfield said: "We made an approach for James and thankfully we got our man. We have had great difficulty scoring goals this season and hopefully he will team up with Pat Morley to form a formidable striking partnership."
