Reddy is new Defoe, says King - February 2, 2001

Swindon manager Andy King is tipping Irish striker Michael Reddy to be his Jermaine Defoe. West Ham's Defoe set a goalscoring record while on loan at Bournemouth - and King reckons Kilkennyman Reddy can do the same.

Defoe scored in ten consecutive games, beating the post-War record jointly held by Irishman John Aldridge. Ireland u21 intternational Reddy, on loan from Premiership Sunderland, scored on his Robins debut last week, as well as winning a penalty converted by fellow Irishman Keith O'Halloran - and King believes he will provide the spark to haul Swindon away from the relegation zone.

"Michael has the ability to be the new Jermain Defoe," King said. "Both have come from Premiership clubs and are talented players.

"And I think Michael has the ability to do what Defoe has done and help us get away from the relegation zone. He is in form and confident and that's what you need from strikers."
