Mountfield sees Cork hold Wolves - July 20, 2000

Derek Mountfield was on the sideline for the first time as Cork manager last night - and in a twist of fate his new club was playing a club at which Mountfield spent many years as a player.

Cork was the second stop on Wolves' Irish tour and after beating Waterford in their first game they must have expected the same again last night. But Cork were in no humour to allow Wolves walk away with the win and the Leesiders held out for a creditable 0-0 draw.

Cork could have taken the lead just after the kick-off when Ollie Cahill broke down the left and hit a great cross into the box. But a stretching Pat Morley missed the ball by inches with Wolves 'keeper Michael Oakes out of position.

The game ebbed and flowed in the brilliant sunshine at Turner's Cross but Wolves began to get on top in the second half. Noel Mooney came to Cork's rescue with two great saves to deny Kevin Muscat and Scott Taylor.

Elsewhere, Galway United showed that their pre-season is going the right way by beating Brighton 2-0 at Terryland Park; and non-leaguers Cherry Orchard earned an excellent draw against English Second Division side Bristol Rovers.

Dundalk were the only Irish team to lose on the night. Dave Savage's Northampton Town beat them 2-1 at Oriel.
