McKeever set for Bristol Rovers switch - December 21, 2000
Former Irish underage international Mark McKeever is set to join Second Division Bristol Rovers from Sheffield Wednesday today.
The striker-cum-winger has been plagued with injuries since he joined Wednesday from Peterborough in April 1997 and the move to Bristol he hopes will be the tonic to get his career back on track.
Mark has always been highly rated. He played for Wednesday in the Premiership before breaking his foot which kept him out for a full season. He spent time on loan at Bristol Rovers two seasons ago and did well enough to remain in the thoughts of the club ever since.
Mark will cost Bristol Rovers around £100,000 which is only one-fifth of what Wednesday paid for him. Rovers manager Ian Holloway will continue talks with Wednesday today and if terms are agreed McKeever will join, subject to a medical.
Holloway said: "Mark had a plate inserted in his foot to help it heal, but that shouldn't stop him passing the medical.
"I've tried three times to sign him and it looks like being a case of fourth time lucky. He's an exciting player who can produce quality crosses and is exactly what we need.
"The lad can't wait to come here and that's the sort of enthusiasm I am looking for. He will give me more options because of his ability to play different positions."
