McCarthy won't replace Kiely - February 23, 2000

Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy has no plans at the moment to call replacements into his squad for Wednesday's Denmark friendly, despite the withdrawal of Steve Carr and Dean Kiely.

McCarthy learned of the Charlton goalkeeper's defection yesterday but said: "I've still got Shay Given and Alan Kelly. I would like to have had all three of them in Dublin next week, but I'm not panicking.

"I'm told Shay Given's finger injury is going to be fine.

"I don't expect to call up a replacement, but if anybody is needed I know Nick Colgan is available."

Tottenham defender Carr, who broke down with a recurrence of his groin injury in raining last week, formally withdrew from the squad yesterday.

The injury is likely to keep the Dublin-born full back out of action for the remainder of the season.
