McPhail out for season - December 1, 2000

Leeds star Stephen McPhail is set to miss the rest of the season after learning that his Achilles tendon injury will require an operation.

The Ireland international's worst fears were confirmed after he made his comeback in a reserve match against Aston Villa earlier in the week. McPhail felt pain in his ankle after the match and next day reported to the club doctor, who decided an operation could no longer be postponed.

The 20-year-old had hoped a week-long session at a specialist Munich clinic last month would obviate the need for surgery. No such luck!

Manager Dave O'Leary confirmed: "We decided it best that he go for surgery to rectify the problem. It's crucial that we allow Stephen to concentrate on returning for pre-season next summer.

"He's only twenty and has at least another ten years at this club. Six months now is nothing compared to the benefit he will gain from taking this course of action."
