Mahon off to Portugal - June 29, 2000

Irish international new boy Alan Mahon is set to join Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon on a Bosman transfer.

Mahon, 23, who won his first senior cap in the April friendly against Greece, has failed to agree terms with Tranmere Rovers and is out of contract.

He has been linked with a host of Premiership clubs but is set to fly to Lisbon for talks within the next two days.

Sporting Lisbon, inspired by ex-Manchester United goalkeeper, one the Portuguese title last season for the first time in 17 years and are looking to bolster their squad before next season's Champions League.

Under the Bosman ruling, if Mahon does sign for a foreign club, John Aldridge's Tranmere Rovers won't get a penny in compensation.
