Wheels come off for Students - September 4, 2000 Longford Town 2 UCD 0 UCD, who are playing competitive football since mid-July, seem to be gone off the boil somewhat. While everybody else was on holidays, UCD were battling away in the InterToto Cup. Then they had games at the end of July in the FAI Supercup, which they won. They started the season well enough with a win against Kilkenny followed by a draw at St. Patrick's Athletic - but they lost last weekend and Longford beat them yesterday. It took until the last quarter of the game for Longford to turn their superiority into goals at Strokestown Road as the newly promoted side find life easier than expected in the higher division. With plenty of goalmouth action throughout, the fans were well entertained. Eric Smith broke the deadlock in the 76th minute when he jumped highest to head home a Stephen Gavin corner. Ten minutes later Shay Zellor sealed the points when he headed home a Colin Notaro cross. UCD manager Martin Moran said: "We're in a mini slump. These players have put us in this mess, they can get us out."
