Longford move up to fourth - November 20, 2000

Longford Town 2 Shamrock Rovers 1

Rovers had the chance to go top of the Eircom Premier League table yesterday when they took on Longford at Strokestown Road - instead it was the newcomers who took the points and rode the escalator up to fourth.

It was the proverbial end-to-end stuff, with loads of chances at both ends - the Hoops probably just shading the first half in terms of opportunities created.

Indeed it was the visitors who took the lead, through Brian Byrne, after fourteen minutes. But it didn't take Longford long to get back on terms, Keith O'Connor producing a brilliant overhead kick which gave Robbie Horgan no chance.

The home side cranked it up after the break and missed a clatter of chances before Stephen Kelly bagged the winner after a quarter of an hour, heading home a great cross from full back Enda Kenny.
