Cork denied in injury time - January 7, 2001

Longford Town 1 Cork City 1

Eircom Premier newboys Longford Town kept their hopes of a double alive - just about - when they scraped a last-gasp draw with Cork City at Flancare.

Most of the clear-cut chances came within the last ten minutes and it was Cork who took the lead with nine left. James Mulligan's persistence carved out the chance and the ageless Pat Morley applied the finish.

It looked all up for Longford as the clock ticked down to 90, but they conjured an equaliser from a straight-forward set-piece. Wes Byrne thumped it long, Stuart Holt headed it back across goal and Vinny Perth stole in to find the net.

Seconds later, Cork could have won it when John Caulfield's header was cleared off the line by Stuart Byrne.

But both teams survived to fight again - at Turner's Cross this Sunday.
