Whyte double does it for Limerick - January 3, 2001
Limerick 2 Monaghan 0
Two brilliant headers by John Whyte were enough to give Limerick three precious points against promotion-chasing Monaghan United last night.
It was a third win on the trot for the Hogan Park side - a streak which has given Limerick an outside chance of promotion themselves.
Limerick had all the play in the first half, with strikers Derek McCarthy and David Dunphy causing all sorts of problems for the Monaghan defence.
But they had to wait until the 48th minute for the breakthrough, when Whyte ghosted onto the end of Dunphy's free kick to power a header past Robbie Hannon.
Whyte scored what was almost a carbon copy from a 70th minute Oran Weldrick corner to make the game safe.
