George signs for Burnley? - August 9, 2000

It is expected to be announced today that Liam George will join Burnley from Luton Town in a deal rumoured to be worth around £650,000. Irish u21 international George was top scorer with the Hatters last season.

The move would be a step up for the man who partnered Robbie Keane for Ireland when they won the u18 European Championships in 1998. Since then George has had trouble with injuries.

The 21-year-old Luton born striker has been tipped for the top for a number of years and the move to Division One could finally lead to the breakthrough.

Under-pressure Luton cannot really turn down a serious offer for any of their players since they are in financial ruin. But they would have hoped to get at least a million for George, undoubtedly one of their best players.

Earlier in the year they sold fellow Irishman Gary Doherty to Tottenham for £1m, which still looks like a bargain since he can play in both attack and defence.
