Leeds grab another Irish boy - July 21, 2000

Leeds United continued their raiding on Ireland by signing the highly rated Paul Keegan from Home Farm. Paul becomes the second Irish boy to join Leeds in the close season after Robbie Shields signed a five-year professional contract some weeks ago.

Leeds beat off heavy competition for the signature of 16-year-old Keegan who has been likened to a young Roy Keane. Paul has been capped at u14 and u15 level for Ireland and is sure to keep on progressing up the underage ladder.

Leeds are now in position to field a fully Irish team. They have well over a dozen Irish players on their books but to be fair to them the boys do get their chance.

At the moment three Irish are nailed-on certs for first-team places when fit and Alan Maybury is knocking on the door.

Manager David O'Leary used Gary Kelly, Ian Harte and Stephen McPhail in a four-man midfield for the second half of a recent pre-season friendly in Sweden! Leeds won 5-3 and Harte even got on the scoresheet.

Harte and Kelly are natural defenders but O'Leary has decided to experiment while he has got the chance. But by the time the start of the season comes around, expect Kelly to be at right-back and Harte at left-back.
