Leeds for Shields - May 31, 2000

Irish u15 international Robbie Shields has followed his cousin Richard Dunne into English football. The Cherry Orchard striker has opted to join Leeds United after going on trials at 18 British clubs.

Shields has signed a five-year professional contract at Elland Road where he will join a host of Irish players including senior internationals Gary Kelly, Ian Harte and Stephen McPhail.

"Robbie was adamant that he wanted to sign when he returned home from the trial," said his father, Richard. "Also, my wife and myself have a peace of mind in Leeds which was better than any other club."

Shields has had a great season in the green of Ireland. He picked up Ireland's player of the tournament honour in the recent Millennium competition. Goalscoring is his forte, which was recognised by most of the English Premiership clubs. A part of his Leeds United deal he will continue his education at the club.
