Kilkenny in deep trouble - November 5, 2000

Kilkenny City 0 UCD 1

Kilkenny are in deep relegation trouble after their latest Buckley Park setback - five points behind Finn Harps at the bottom of the table and nine points adrift of the safety zone.

Manager Joe McGrath tried to boost his squad by sacking Jason Kabia and signing American striker Jonathan Akin during the week - but the Cats still looked desperately short of firepower.

UCD - ahead from the 16th minute - controlled the game throughout, but Kilkenny could still have nicked at least a draw if they had taken their chances.

The Students went ahead when Eamonn McLoughlin blasted home from 18 yards, courtesy of an upright.

Kilkenny's Fran Carter also hit an upright, from Riddell's cross - but, as if to underline the sides' contrasting fortunes, Carter's effort came back into play.

With minutes left, Eoin Mullen missed a nailed-down sitter; and right at the death Brian Jordan broke clear but saw his shot well dealt with by Barry Ryan.
