First win for Candystripes - September 4, 2000

Kilkenny City 0 Derry City 2

Derry City's well publicised troubles off the pitch were beginning to infringe on things on the pitch - but they put it all behind them yesterday at Buckley Park as they earned their first league win of the campaign, thanks to two second half goals.

It was the first time this season that Kilkenny manager Pat Byrne was allowed pitch-side - but after watching his team's display he must be ruing his decision to pay his fine which led to the lifting of the ban.

Both teams were awful in the first half and it took until the 42nd minute for the first clear-cut chance.

Derry's Gary Beckett a fierce 20-yard drive which was spectacularly tipped over by Kilkenny goalkeeper Robert Forde. Minutes later Kilkenny's Jason Kabia had the ball in the Derry net but referee Joe Casey ruled it out because of a foul by Damien Brennan.

Derry finally got the reward for their pressure in the 65th minute. Forde spilled a Sean Hargan long throw and Gary Beckett was in the right place at the right time to poke the ball into the net.

The long throw was the weapon of choice for Derry all afternoon and another one led to their second, points-securing goal in injury time. Darren McCaul got on the end of it and hit the ball into the back of the net with the aid of a deflection from a Kilkenny defender.
