Kilkenny City in cash crisis - January 23, 2001

Kilkenny City have run into a short-term cash crisis - brought on by the bad weather. Now the big freeze over Christmas is threatening a big freeze in players' wages!

Tonight's scheduled home game against Finn Harps is the latest victim of the weather.

Kilkenny have managed to play just three home games since the beginning of December, due to the pitch at Buckley Park being frozen for most of the winter.

And that came on the heels of a wet autumn which saw the Buckley pitch waterlogged for much of November. The Cats' home fixture against Bohemians was twice postponed that month before the clubs eventually opted to play the Dalymount leg on December 12. The Buckley Park leg finally took place last weekend - but Kilkenny have still played just 19 league games, two fewer than most clubs in the premier division.

General manager Jimmy Rhatigan said: "Things are a little difficult at the moment - but we'll pull through as long as we don't have too many more postponements."
