Cats chief calls for summer soccer - November 28, 2000

Kilkenny v Bohemians, Buckley Park, 19:30

Kilkenny City and Bohemians will try tonight for the third time to play their bottom-versus-top Eircom League fixture - and Cats general manager Jimmy Rhatigan has added his voice to those calling for summer soccer.

A move to a March-October playing season was turned down by League clubs last year - but the lousy winter has caused many of them to have second thoughts.

Kilkenny, in a desperate battle to avoid relegation, have seen themselves slip behind their rivals while the Cats were forced to cool their heels.

Tonight's match has already been postponed twice and Kilkenny's away trip to Derry City also fell victim to the weather at the weekend.

"I believe it's time to give summer soccer a chance," Rhatigan said. "We've suffered because of the weather at home and away in the last few weeks."

Kilkenny boss Joe McGrath will at lest get the chance to unveil his new signings- striker Carlos Rocha, midfielder Paul McAreavey and Kiwi defender Gavin Wilkinson. Bohs are expected to field the same side that drew in Cork on Saturday.

Kilkenny need to get something out of the game to close the six-point gap on second-from-bottom Finn Harps.
