Nolan row brewing - October 31, 2000 Ireland and England are set for a row over the services of highly rated Bolton teenager Kevin Nolan. But if reports are right, and he would rather play for England, then the FAI should wash their hands of him. Brian Kerr called Nolan up for Ireland's friendly game against the Swiss u18 team at the end of September. But the player did not get a chance to shine on the pitch so his options are still open - and, with Bolton manager Sam Allardyce calling on the English set-up not to leave the player slip through their grasp, there could be big trouble in the months to come. "Both countries can claim Kevin and it's his decision who he plays for," said Allardyce. "We've had contact from both countries and I think England would be very foolish if they don't tie Kevin up as quickly as possible. "If they don't, then he may choose to go and play for the Republic. That would be their gain and England's loss. "I know the lad and his dad would prefer that he played for England and they are well aware of the situation." The Liverpool-born midfielder qualifies for Ireland through his parents but has yet to gain representative honours for either country. |
