Kernaghan ready for return - August 31, 2000

Former Republic of Ireland central defender Alan Kernaghan is hoping to get his season back on track by being fit to face Kilmarnock in the CIS League Cup next week.

The St. Johnstone defender started the season well. He scored in his club's first league game at Ibrox against Rangers which nearly led to a shock win.

Then the following week he was in complete control against Hearts before suffering a rib injury which forced him off.

St. Johnstone were winning the game at the time but the absence of Kernaghan in the back four caused a mini-collapse as they conceded two goals in the last couple of minutes to earn only a draw.

St. Johnstone manager Sandy Clark watched him against Killies' under 21s and, like many of the supporters, will want to see him back in action as soon as possible.

Clark said: "He's a bit stiff and sore but that's only to be expected. Otherwise, he's in great shape. All being well he'll be back with us again. He's an important player for St Johnstone."
