Kernaghan close to Saints deal - July 18, 2000

Alan Kernaghan is ready and willing to sign a new contract with St. Johnstone which would keep the 33-year-old defender at the club for the remainder of his career.

Manager Sandy Clark was waiting for Kernaghan to return to action before offering him a contract after Alan suffered a lengthy absence due to injury. He played in a pre-season win against Norwich at the weekend and impressed the manager with his commitment.

Clark said: "Alan and I have an agreement and we will be looking at the situation this week. He looked as if he was back to normal today and played well - as did the rest of the players."

The former Irish international centre-back revived his career at St. Johnstone after a nightmare time at Man City.

Kernaghan said: "I think we're going in the right direction here and that good times are ahead.

"There have been a lot of changes and the manager has stressed on us that he wants to play a more attractive game which is why we're playing with two wingers.

"He's obviously been very impressed by what he saw in the European Championships and is trying to take a bit of that on board and put it into our game.

"We'd agreed to wait until I'd got through these games before we started talking so that's what we'll do now and hopefully we can get something sorted out. I'm happy here but if it's not right for me, it's not right for me."
