Captain feels Irish can qualify - September 4, 2000

Irish captain Roy Keane feels that Ireland can qualify for the World Cup finals in 2002 if they have more belief in themselves.

Ireland ran the Dutch ragged for long periods on Saturday night in Amsterdam and were unlucky not the collect all three points but Keane believes that they can build from that result and bring back the glory days to Irish football.

Keane said: "We've got to start giving ourselves a bit more credit, we are always under-estimating ourselves. We have got good players. People are always saying the Irish will have a good time, no matter what the result. Well, I get sick to death of all that stuff.

"We have got to set ourselves a higher aim, we must start winning matches because we have not qualified for a tournament since 1994. The fans might be happy with a 2-2 draw in Holland but we're professionals and at 2-0 up we should have shut up shop.

"You have to give the Dutch credit and with van Gaal in charge they were always going to keep coming at us. We have got to have much higher standards than that though."
