Sheridan turns back the years - January 24, 2001

Evergreen John Sheridan has hit a rich vein of form in front of goal, scoring in his last two games, a record he has not achieved since the 1996-97 season.

The 36-year-old Irish international scored for Oldham at the weekend against a Wigan side which included his brother Darren.

He gave Oldham the lead in the 21st minute with a 20-yard free-kick which hit the bar before rebounding over the line off the goalkeeper's back. Brother Darren had the last laugh though as Wigan went on to win the game 3-1.

This did not overly concern the former Sheffield Wednesday legend and he was on the mark again last night against Luton. This time, though, he saved his goal for later in the game. Oldham were already 1-0 up when they won a free kick from Sheridan's favourite range, 20 yards out. John stepped up and curled the ball over the Luton wall and into the top right-hand corner of the net.

Sheridan has averaged two goals a season for three of the last four years so this points to an early end to his scoring spree. But Brentford - Oldham's next opponents - would want to be careful not to leave him with any free kicks in the vicinity of their goal because he has a taste for it now!
